“Sallie Mae Back” Turns a Label Advance into a Debt-Payment Anthem
Dee-1 released the “Sallie Mae Back” video in February 2016 after using his record-label advance to finish paying his student loans. He described the song as both a celebration of becoming debt-free and encouragement for others still working toward that goal.

The Nasir Jones Fellowship Examines Hip-Hop as a Teaching Tool
Harvard's Hip Hop Archive & Research Institute selected David “Dee-1” Augustine as its 2022–2023 Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellow. His fellowship project, “Hip Hop Saved My Life: Examining Hip Hop as a Teaching Tool Inside the Black Community,” connected his recording career with the educational work of a former middle-school math teacher.
