Augustine’s Legacy Turns Family History into the Album’s Central Question

S.O. released Augustine’s Legacy through Lamp Mode Recordings on September 6, 2019. The fifth album is named for his late father, Augustine Otukpe; S.O. explained that the birth of his daughter Sade-Rose made him consider both the legacy he inherited from his father and the one his own family would inherit from him.

The record’s advance singles included “Goals,” a critique of social-media presentation, and “White Jesus.” That combination places the album’s family narrative alongside S.O.’s direct engagement with identity and public culture.

S.O. and G.P. Built the So It Begins–So It Ends Trilogy as a Rapper-Producer Partnership

Producer G.P. made all but two songs across S.O.’s three-album sequence So It Begins, So It Continues and So It Ends. Their working relationship began in a London studio in 2005, when S.O. was 16; after Lamp Mode signed S.O., the pair completed So It Begins in three months.

Their shared history shaped specific songs. “Memoirs,” from So It Continues, is S.O.’s letter to a close friend who had left the faith, and G.P.—who also knew the friend—wrote and sang its hook. On So It Ends, “Where Do We Go from Here?” opens with a voicemail from S.O.’s niece before he examines the cost his music career had imposed on family relationships.
